This report presents the recommendations of the Working Families Task Force that sought to identify ways to strengthen the protections in place for Chicago’s workers. The task force examined three issues: paid sick leave, schedule predictability for shift workers, and paid family and medical leave. After 6 months of research, community engagement, and deliberation, the task force is proposing a framework for expanding access to sick leave and family and medical leave while recommending further research and discussion on schedule predictability before any legislative action is taken. The report recommends expanding sick leave to include all FMLA-eligible usages, including the care of a newborn, newly-adopted, or newly-placed child. The report begins with an explanation of the context for the development of the recommendations. The importance of stakeholder inclusion, the activities of the task force, and information sources for the work of the task force are discussed. Each of the targeted issues is then explored and background information, current legislation, and key discussions are summarized. Additional recommendations are also made for shared security accounts and for the recognition of family-friendly companies. The report closes with ideas for future consideration. 44 references.
