Intended to advance conversations about racial equity and providing children of color with the opportunities they need to thrive, this report presents data by race and ethnicity on indicators that suggest whether children are succeeding in each stage of life, from birth through young adulthood and are on the path to economic success. The indicators measure racial differences in the following areas: babies born at normal birth weight; children ages 3 to 5 enrolled in nursery school, preschool, or kindergarten; fourth graders who scored at or above proficient in reading; eighth graders who scored at or above proficient in math; females ages 15 to 19 who delay childbearing until adulthood; high school students graduating on time; young adults ages 19 to 26 who are in school or working; young adults ages 25 to 29 who have completed an associate’s degree or higher; children who live with a householder who has at least a high school diploma; children who live in two-parent families; children who live in families with incomes at or above 200% of poverty; and children who live in low-poverty areas. The data from the 12 indicators are aggregated into a composite index that enables comparisons across racial groups and States. Factors that impact the life changes of African-American, American Indian, Asian and Pacific Islander, Latino, and White children are discussed, and recommendations for investing for the future are made. 52 references.
