Intended for Illinois parents, this book explains how living the Strengthening Families protective factors can assist parents in awakening their potential as parents. Information is drawn from more than 600 Love is Not Enough Parent Cafes that have been held in Illinois over a four year period. At these gatherings, parents came together and shared wisdom and ideas for keeping their families strong and their children safe. An introduction discusses the importance of keeping families safe, protecting a family from the inside out, key protective factors, and ways of building or tearing down protective factors. Identified protective factors include: parental resilience, social connections, concrete support in times of need, knowledge of parenting and child development, social and emotional competence of children, and healthy parent-child relationships. Part 2 of the book focuses on living the protective factors by taking care of oneself, being a strong parent, and building a healthy relationship with each child. Each section provides helpful rules on how to live the protective factors to keep children safe and families strong. Sections also include questions and activities for reflection.
