Many of the fathers that seek support from responsible fatherhood and human service programs have experienced trauma that affects multiple aspects of their daily lives, including their parenting; the way they view themselves, others, and the world around them; and their ability to ask for and accept help. During this session, experienced practitioners shared effective trauma-informed and strengths-based approaches for providing in-person and virtual care and service delivery to low-income fathers.
This report presents findings from a feasibility evaluation of the Bridges to Pathways (Bridges) program. Bridges was a program for young men in Chicago between the ages of 17 and 21 years who were involved with the criminal or juvenile justice system and lacked a high school credential. The program offered intensive mentoring and case management, as well as the opportunity to earn a high school credential, attend social-emotional learning workshops, and participate in a subsidized internship. Intimate partner violence (IPV) is defined as physical violence, sexual violence, stalking, and/or psychological aggression by a current or former intimate partner. IPV is prevalent and has lasting consequences for survivors and their children (CDC, 2017). It is important to understand the services that exist to help prevent IPV and address it effectively when it occurs. IPV services reach a relatively small proportion of men, women, and families affected, and men in particular can be difficult to reach.
