This report discusses the findings of a study that investigated the family characteristics, parent-child relationships, and parenting views and needs of incarcerated males. Training Materials This trainer's manual provides instructions for presenting a parent education course for fathers in prison. The course consists of six weekly sessions that address the parenting styles of fathers, the role of fathers in child development, child reactions to separation and loss, communication, and barriers for African American fathers in prison. The resource guide outlines the objectives for each session and includes copy-ready handouts and exercises. Strategies for gaining the support of the prison administration are discussed. This final report summarizes the results of an NCCAN-funded project designed to reduce child abuse and neglect among families with adolescent parents. The project consisted of group parenting education programs; peer supports; in-home intensive services when needed; and educational and support services for fathers. An evaluation of the program found that long-term, open-ended group intervention was more effective than a 12-week didactic group model.
