This report presents findings from a feasibility evaluation of the Bridges to Pathways (Bridges) program. Bridges was a program for young men in Chicago between the ages of 17 and 21 years who were involved with the criminal or juvenile justice system and lacked a high school credential. The Parents and Children Together (PACT) evaluation included four Responsible Fatherhood (RF) programs in its rigorous multi-component research design. Participation in Responsible Fatherhood Programs in the PACT Evaluation: Associations with Father and Program Characteristics.

This brief presents new findings on the factors that are associated with fathers’ participation in RF programs. It is based on data collected for the implementation study of RF programs, which documents how the programs were designed and operated and identifies challenges and promising practices. The brief also explores variation in participation by programmatic differences. It concludes with a summary of common barriers to participation and suggestions for program providers about how to help fathers overcome these barriers. (Author abstract modified)

Thirteen years have passed since the last comprehensive review of the fatherhood field, Map and Track: State Initiatives to Encourage Responsible Fatherhood (Bernard & Knitzer, 1999). OFA Promoting Responsible Fatherhood Grant: Summary Of Lessons Learned.

During the last five years we have had the privilege of partnering with selected Parents as Teachers (PAT) sites through the Office of Family Assistance Promoting Responsible Fatherhood Grant to enhance father involvement. We learned many lessons as partner sites provided group meetings in urban, rural, and military communities that spanned a range of demographics. Our PAT sites experienced a wide array of successes and challenges, sometimes unique to their community. These experiences provide the foundation for this summary of lessons learned.
