This chapter explores the loss that children feel when separated from their father by divorce or because their parents never married. Research has found that in most cases, visits are awkward for the child and his parents and contact between fathers and their children decreases over time. Children of divorce experience more negative outcomes than children whose fathers died because they tend to externalize, rather than internalize, their emotions. Despite the increase in the number of children born to unwed White mothers, social policies and attitudes about female-headed households usually depict the family structure as a Black issue. Journal Article A recent study conducted by the United States Department of Education found that father involvement has a direct effect on a child's academic achievement. Although fathers and mothers interact differently with their children, both parents have an important role in child development. Father involvement can be enhanced by caring for the child during infancy, attending doctor's appointments, participating in daily routines and joint activities, and encouraging independence during adolescence.
