It may seem a difficult task to engage men in marriage and relationship education (MRE) classes. While women may be more willing to talk freely about their relationships in any setting, men may need a little more coaxing. In couple-based services, there are ways to facilitate an open discussion that will help men reveal their thoughts and even their feelings toward children, relationships and marriage. Children who grow up in single-parent families are more likely to be poor, have trouble in school, and become teen parents themselves. Additionally, children who are born to a mother who is a teenager, who hasn't finished high school, and who isn't married are nine times more likely to be poor than a child whose mother is even a few years older, is married and has at least finished high school. In 2005, approximately 520,000 children were removed from their homes and placed in foster care. More than half of these children were removed from their homes because of an incidence of abuse or neglect. Approximately 80 percent of these children had noncustodial fathers, and roughly 54 percent had no contact with their father in the past year.
