Portrayals of father-daughter relationships in media and history are considered, along with research findings that show the importance of fathers to daughters and insights regarding the nature and significance of father-daughter relations. Key issues in the relationship dance are discussed and include: learning from each other's diverse perspectives, promoting healthy individual development, creating a template for close relationships, and influencing a positive female identity. This paper explains the different ways that parents benefit from participating in the Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters program (HIPPY), a home-based early intervention program that helps parents teach skills important to school readiness and success to their 3 to 5-year-old children.
