Journal Article Abstract: Objective: The relationship between fatherhood and both psychiatric distress and severity of substance abuse (SA) among men entering SA treatment has not been well explored. This study was designed to (a) examine differences in symptoms of men presenting for SA assessment based on fatherhood status and (b) determine how posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and severity of SA were associated with parenting for men who were fathers. Methods: PTSD symptoms, severity of SA, and parenting data reported on structured questionnaires were collected from 126 men presenting for an…

This set of three slide presentations shares findings on the effectiveness of home visiting programs in engaging fathers. The first presentation discusses findings from a study that reviewed research on programs and services to support fathers, including the use of home visiting programs. It found home-visiting programs for fathers are uncommon but may be increasing, most programs are an expansion of services offered to mothers and children, programs may have difficulty convincing families and staff that the programs are for men, and that there is insufficient research to evaluate the…

Journal Article Emotions are complex processes that are essential for survival and adaptation. Recent studies of children and animals are shedding light on how the developing brain learns to rapidly respond to signals in the environment, assess the emotional significance of this information, and in so doing adaptively regulate subsequent behavior. Here, I describe studies of children and nonhuman primates who are developing within emotionally aberrant environments. Examining these populations provides new insights on the ways in which the social or interpersonal contexts of parenting may influence…

Journal Article Parenting is best understood from within a framework of person/context influence and interaction. Four themes from the articles are discussed. First, a multilevel perspective allows us to integrate across two nested structures: the biological and cognitive systems nested within individuals and the way in which individuals are nested within complex social environments. Second, the biological and cognitive pathways that underlie behavioral continuities across the life course are discussed. Third, intergenerational influences involve both mediating and moderating mechanisms. Fourth, one of the…

Journal Article This paper is a qualitative exploration of the relationship themes between a father and his daughter, when she has an eating disorder. It aims to explore the different themes within three father/daughter dyad interviews, to determine commonalities and trans-generational experiences. The Adult Attachment Interview was carried out with each of the participants, along with an open unstructured interview regarding their attitudes around the eating disorder. These interviews were then analysed using an interpretative analysis of the emerging themes, drawing upon Interpretative Phenomenological…

Journal Article Combining social construction of gender and equity perspectives on parents' division of labor, this study extended research on associations between parents' childrearing involvement and adjustment by (a) differentiating between types of childrearing activities (task focused vs. relationship focused), (b) examining patterns of differences in these links for mothers versus fathers, and (c) testing whether gender-role attitudes regarding family labor moderated these associations. One hundred sixty-nine mothers and fathers reported on perceptions of their involvement in relationship-focused and…

Journal Article Background The dominant discourse of popular media appears to paint a disparaging picture of parents deemed overly concerned about their children's safety. Child injury prevention interventions frequently focus on influencing parenting behaviours. Fathers are increasingly involved in childcare, highlighting the need to understand their perspectives on overprotective parenting as it relates to considerations of injury prevention while actively engaged with their children. Methods Qualitative interviews were carried out with 32 fathers of children aged 2-7 years in a Canadian urban setting.…

Journal Article Background: Perinatal research on anxiety and depression has primarily focused on mothers. We have limited knowledge of fathers' anxiety during the perinatal period yet there is evidence that the parenting capacity of a person can be compromised by anxiety and depression. The purpose of this paper is to identify the impact of a father inclusive intervention on perinatal anxiety and depression. The prime focus of the intervention was to provide education and support to fathers of breastfeeding partners with the aim of increasing both initiation and duration of breastfeeding. Methods: A…

Journal Article This article studied the relations of children's mental health problems to the warmth of their relationship with their noncustodial father and custodial mother and the level of conflict between the parents. Using a sample of 182 divorcing families, multiple regression was used to test the independent effect of father warmth, mother warmth, and interparental conflict. Results indicated that father warmth and mother warmth were both independently related to lower child-externalizing problems. However, the relations between mother and child warmth and child-internalizing problems were different…
