This paper explains the different ways that parents benefit from participating in the Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters program (HIPPY), a home-based early intervention program that helps parents teach skills important to school readiness and success to their 3 to 5-year-old children. This free service is delivered by HIPPY home visitors who live in targeted high-need communities. The paper begins by explaining the HIPPY model and findings on the effectiveness of the HIPPY program. A chart is then provided that lists the reasonable, anticipated outcomes that will result from the parent's progressive involvement in HIPPY. The goals include: parent will participate in all aspects of the HIPPY program; parent will learn more about their child; parent will increase educational activity in the home; parent will increasingly enjoy educational interaction with child; parent will engage in positive and effective parenting behaviors with the child; parent will feel more prepared to help child with school work; parent will enhance skills and knowledge from attending group meetings; parent will participate in school and community activities; and parent will gain skills and confidence to grow personally. For each goal, information is provided on specific objectives, performance/outcome indictors, possible measure and benefits to children. 13 references.
