Designed for parents and youth, this notebook includes exercises for the Getting Real component of the Creating Lasting Family Connections Curriculum, a curriculum for promoting the healthy development of youth at risk for alcohol and other drug abuse. After providing information on the Council on Prevention and Education: Substances, Inc. (COPES), the notebook outlines the individual training components that make up the Creating Lasting Family Connections prevention program model and provides an overview of the Getting Real communication module. Brief articles, exercises, and parental aids are then provided that relate to five 1 to 1-1/2 hour training sessions. The sessions address: the purpose of communication, how one's family and environmental history influences responses, and basic components of communication; intimate and defensive responses; verbal and non-verbal components of intimate and defensive responses, and thoughts and feelings associated with using and receiving each response; identifying and differentiating intimate and defensive responses; and understanding the value of using Getting Real to enrich relationships. The notebook closes with illustrations of defensive and intimate responses.
