Did you know that January 23rd is National Pie Day? The day has been celebrated since the mid-1970s and is now sponsored by the American Pie Council. So, you might want to run to the market, grab some baking dishes, and bake a beloved treat with your children!

Monday January 16th is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, a National Day of Service to encourage Americans to move closer to Dr. King’s dream of a world governed by equality, justice, and peace for all. Find ways to volunteer with your child(ren) to serve your community and help take us a step closer to fulfilling Dr. King’s dream and legacy.

National Human Trafficking Prevention Day, also known as Wear Blue Day, is recognized on January 11th to raise awareness of the ongoing impact of slavery and human trafficking. The Blue Campaign organizes various events throughout January to further highlight the issues and recommend ways to combat victimization of populations around the globe.

As the season’s weather brings snow, it’s a great opportunity to have some winter fun. A creative way to have some outdoor winter fun with your children is to paint the snow. There are numerous ways to play with colorful snow ranging from creating pictures to having colorful snowball fights. Here is a guide of how to paint snow with food coloring.

Kwanzaa starts on December 26th and lasts for 7 days, with each day representing a different principle. The seven principles are unity, self-determination, responsibility and collective work, collective economics, purpose, creativity, and faith. Take some time with your children to talk about Kwanzaa and how these principles may apply to your life.

Wednesday the 21st of December is the Winter Solstice, when half of the Earth is tilted farthest from the sun. Discuss with your child(ren) the differences between the solstice and the season and how different cultures celebrate the solstice. If you can, take them outside at noon as the shadow that they will see will be the longest shadow you can cast all year.   

Bake some cookies with you child(ren)! Use this activity to work on your child(ren)’s math skills by letting them measure ingredients. If you can, organize a cookie exchange with family and or friends.

Make paper snowflakes with your child(ren) and use it as an opportunity to talk about individuality (as every snowflake is unique) and shapes / symmetry. You may choose to provide templates or let them figure out what shapes the cut outs make.
